Beware... there be pirates coming (to the LOL program on April 4th...)

The pirates are coming! The pirates are coming! On April 4th, 2013, LOL will be visited by Dangerous Dan and Seaspray who will teach our students about "Pirates through History" and "Navigation in the 16th Century."

Rumor has it they are bringing pirate booty to share with new recruits and there might be a sword play demonstration for the students of the Thursday LOL Program.

In their presentation on "Navigation in the 16th Century", they've recommended two links in the event that students would like to build their own astrolabe and learn how to use it in class. In real life in the 15th and 16th century, students did have to make their own - it was part of their education.

Succesful Science Saturday today!

We had a great Science Saturday today, thanks to Beth Thompson, as she helped her students to explore acids and bases found commonly in areas. Students got to use pH sticks and pH meters, and do some fun hands-on experiments and demonstrations, learned about the properties of acids and bases, what the pH scale measures, how to perform titration, and had fun in the process. Introducing Learning Options Club Day - Starting February 15th, 2013

Learning Options is expanding its programming! Come join us at Songbird Learning Center for a Friday Club Day each week, beginning Friday, February 15th. Being part of Club Day allows students to be very focused on an area they may find particularly interesting. Our two new clubs are Science Club and Writing Club. Here are additional details about each of them:

Science Club
Mentor/Supervisor: Victoria Schweizer
Meeting Times: Fridays from 9:30 – 11:30 am
Starting/Ending Dates: February 15th – end of April, with optional meeting days through May.
Target Age Group: Grades 3 – 6
Participation Fee: $50 per student
